Kenya's Sheila Chepkirui won the women's race at the New York City Marathon on Sunday in 2 hours 24 minutes 36 seconds. It is her second New York title, after her first win in 2024. She finished six seconds ahead of American Jess McClain.

Defending champion Hellen Obiri, who set the women's course record of 2:19:51 when she won last year, was third, less than a second behind McClain, who passed her in the final strides. Edna Kiplagat, the 2010 New York champion, was fourth at the age of 46, and Mercy Chelangat was fifth, giving Kenyan women four of the top five places.

McClain's second place was the first podium finish in New York by an American man or woman since Shalane Flanagan was third in 2018, NBC Sports reported.

Sweden's Andreas Almgren won the men's race in 2:06:01 in his first marathon, 13 seconds ahead of Italy's Yemaneberhan Crippa. He is the first Swede to win in New York. Kenya's Benson Kipruto, the defending men's champion, was fourth in 2:06:27, and Geoffrey Kamworor was eighth in 2:07:09.

This year's race marked 50 years since the marathon was first run through all five of New York's boroughs.
