Wiper Patriotic Front leader Kalonzo Musyoka says he has information that police plan to arrest Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya and other opposition-allied leaders, and has warned against it.
Speaking in Mwingi on Saturday, Kalonzo said the opposition would resist any attempt to intimidate or harass elected leaders, and offered to represent Natembeya in court if he is arrested. His claim of an arrest plan could not be independently verified.
Kalonzo also asked President William Ruto to explain remarks he made in Iten that suggested political leaders could face accidents, calling them careless as the country heads into an election year.
Tension has risen in Trans Nzoia over the allocation of stalls at the Masinde Muliro Market in Kitale. Police said on 16 October that clashes between rival supporters left two officers injured and two government vehicles damaged. Natembeya has also questioned the withdrawal of his security detail.
No response from State House or the police to Kalonzo's claims had been reported at the time of writing.
