Victims of human rights violations, including people hurt during protests, have until 14 November 2026 to file claims for compensation, the Panel of Experts on Compensation of Victims of Human Rights Violations said on Tuesday. The panel said it will stop receiving new claims after that date.

Claims received before the deadline, including those already filed, will be verified and authenticated before any payment decision, and applicants will be told the outcome, the panel said. It is handling claims for deaths, injuries, sexual violence, economic losses and other recognised harms.

The panel, chaired by Prof Makau Mutua, was set up in 2025. President William Ruto tasked it with covering violations linked to protests between 2013 and 2025, and said Sh2 billion had been set aside for the programme.

The panel has paid victims in phases, and recently said about Sh1.014 billion had gone to 1,083 protest victims. In its sixth phase, approved on 8 October, it cleared Sh83.65 million for 259 claims, covering civilians and uniformed officers.
