Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna opened the headquarters of the Linda Mwananchi Movement in Lavington, Nairobi, on Friday. Opposition leaders Rigathi Gachagua of the DCP, Kalonzo Musyoka of Wiper and Eugene Wamalwa of DAP-Kenya attended, along with several MPs and senators.
Sifuna said the united opposition wants to field a single candidate against President William Ruto, and that if the other principals let him carry the opposition's flag, Ruto would be sent home at the general election on 10 August 2027.
Part of the crowd booed Kalonzo after he said Sifuna was not yet a presidential candidate and that Wamalwa had "jumped the gun" by declaring him one. "You have to wait for the 13th of November," Kalonzo said, as some in the crowd chanted "President Sifuna". Sifuna stepped in, telling the crowd: "This is no way to treat our guests."
Kalonzo said the nomination must follow the opposition's agreed procedure, and pledged to back Sifuna, Gachagua or Wamalwa if any of them emerges as the opposition's preferred flagbearer. Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya said the opposition would name one presidential candidate in due time.
