Tribunal blocks Azimio's rebrand to Ukombozi Alliance
The orders stop the Registrar of Political Parties from approving the new name until a dispute over 'Ukombozi' is decided.
The Political Parties Disputes Tribunal has stopped the Registrar of Political Parties from approving, gazetting or registering the Azimio La Umoja coalition's new name, The Ukombozi Alliance, until a case challenging it is decided.
The petitioner says he had already reserved the name Ukombozi Peoples Party, and argues that the Registrar cannot therefore give the Ukombozi name to the coalition. Wiper, whose leader Kalonzo Musyoka announced the rebrand to bring more opposition parties on board, is a party to the case.
The tribunal certified the matter as urgent and gave the Registrar and Wiper seven days to respond. It will check on compliance on 29 October.
The case is the latest hurdle in the opposition's efforts to reorganise ahead of the 2027 General Election.
